Hello! My name is Martyn Hurt and I’m 50 years old. I have type 2 episodic ataxia (EA2.) I was born in Nottingham but we moved away when I was 13. Finally ending up in Rochdale (1984) where I met my wife, Julie, who lived over the road and went to the same school.
We were married in January 1991 (so we were both 19), and our first son, Alex, was born in the September, and our second son Kyle born in November 1992.
We moved to Burnley in 1996 and have been here ever since. Both my parents are deceased.
I enjoy local politics, reading and caravanning – we have a touring caravan on a permanent pitch because towing became too much for me, and that’s something that helps relax me and also helps me recuperate – plus everything being on one level is a huge help.
I also enjoy computer games, but it has been about 8 months since I played anything because of the ataxia and everything else happening in life. We have a 21 month old Border Collie called Charlie who keeps us on our toes.
My real enjoyment comes from cooking and baking, but that is getting harder to do due to the vertigo, falls and fatigue, but I will keep cooking for as long as I can.
This is why you should never stop believing in yourself. Don’t let anything stop you from doing the things you enjoy, not even ataxia!
