It’s a new year with fresh goals! So why not set a challenge… to kick-start your swimming, to earn an epic medal, to be part of something special, to dive into nature!
The Great North Swim, 7-9 June 2024, has something for everyone, for all ages and all abilities, whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or a beginner. Join thousands of like-minded people and set yourself an open water challenge in the great outdoors at the UK’s biggest open water swim event.
If you're going to swim, make it a Great Swim!
There are a range of distances: Swim250 | 1/2 mile | 1 mile | 2 mile | 5k | 10k to choose from.
The popular event village will return, complete with big screen, exhibitor stands, pop-up food stalls and music so lots to keep your friends and family entertained too when they aren't cheering you on!
Event Location
Windermere is England's largest lake at 10.5 miles long (17km), stretching from Ambleside in the North to Newby Bridge in the South.
Surrounded by some of the nation’s most spectacular natural scenery - the Lake District National Park - the Great North Swim is an inspiring outdoor swim. With large screens around the event site, family and friends can watch all the action.
Accessibility
All distances are accessible, as long as the participant is comfortable swimming the distance. The swim team at the start and finish will ensure the swimmer enters and comes out of the water safety. Please just let the Fundraising team know that you have ataxia when you register, and they will liaise with the organisers. There are also lots of kayakers in the water to help any swimmer who needs it. Wheelchairs or crutches will be transported from the start ready for the swimmer at the finish.
For safety reasons the Swim features dry-land sections at the start and finish of the course, and so may not be suitable to all swimmers. This is where swimmers will walk on dry land into the water, and also at the finish, but assistance is on hand if required.
