Chase Your Dreams – Ali

Post Published: August 2, 2024

Here is another fantastic blog post from our friend Ali. In his blog post, Ali talks about the importance of staying positive and believing in yourself.

I’m calling out to all my newly ataxians: please do not be pessimistic and avoid all the negative thoughts. I can’t stress enough the importance of enjoying the moment and living life as it comes.

I was diagnosed with ataxia back in 2009, and in 2016, I started to use a wheelchair because I knew this would give me more freedom. I would usually hold onto the walls or get help from my family when navigating around the house. During COVID time, I had to start using a wheelchair in the house as well. Being in a wheelchair did not mean anything to me because I still felt passionate about life. Being in a wheelchair only helped me to do my day-to-day activities easily.

I studied until year 9, and in 2015, I had to drop out of school. However, this was not due to my ataxia; it was a personal choice. I know most of us feel pressured to study, but if it’s not for you, then it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of opportunities out there, find something that suits you. Honestly, having a degree does not define you, so please do not beat yourself. Yes. If I had a choice, I would probably go back and finish my studies. But that is in the past now.

The most important thing is to believe in yourself and just go for it. I’m sure you all have caring and supportive people around you. Chase your dreams and tell yourselves you can do it.

When I first started using a wheelchair, I thought I would be wheelchair-bound forever. It upset me, and I felt very overwhelmed. Even though I could not walk, I was able to hold onto my wheelchair and stand out of it on my own. This on its own gave me hope, and I felt powerful. I knew I could do better as long as I believed in myself. If you do not try, you will never know if you can do it or not. Take little but firm steps towards the things you want to accomplish.

My final advice is: Believe in yourself. Trust in yourself and do not be afraid. Do not feel unworthy. Do not let the dark thoughts overtake you. Chase your dreams, no matter what!
